3 Ways to Address the Fear Stopping You from Reaching Your Goals

WARNING: Before you read any further, please know that I’m about to get all in your business, but with ALL the love in the world. Let’s talk about it...

From the OUTSIDE looking IN, your life is fantastic.

You are moving and shaking like a real winner. You are further along in life than those who came before you. You are well-liked and making choices that make those closest to you proud. To many, you are #lifegoals.

But, from the INSIDE looking OUT, your world looks and feels very different…

As much as you enjoy aspects of your life, you wake up feeling like something is missing every day. You feel like you are on a hamster wheel, living dreams that have never belonged to you while silently aching for one good opportunity to chase your own.

And on those days when you are feeling all brave, ready to step off the hamster wheel, you always get tripped up by that little voice in your head that says things like:

“You know you don’t have the time to ____.”

“You don’t have the energy to try ____.”

“Did you forget that you must do ____ for ____ first?”

“You can’t do ____ until you get your degree in ____.”

“You’re just not ready to ____.”

“You know ____ is a crazy idea, right?”

“Maybe you should wait until ____ to take on that endeavor.”

You try to move despite that voice but instead lean into the reminders and warnings as you return to your spot on the hamster wheel. You know what to expect and what is expected of you. The running is draining but safe.

Now that you know I know where you are on the inside, I want you to ask yourself one really important question…

Is FEAR the thing keeping you on that hamster wheel?

While it is not easy to admit, Fear keeps most of us on the proverbial hamster wheel, living a life that does not feel aligned with who we KNOW, in our hearts, we were created to be.

Maybe it’s the Fear of Disappointing yourself, your family, your friends, etc, if you move toward that big, bold dream but cannot bring it to reality.

Maybe it’s the Fear of Judgment from your community when you go after that dream and mistakes keep you from getting to the end goal in a “timely fashion”.

Maybe it’s the Fear of Failure that always comes when you move toward something unknown without ALL the training, money, experience, etc. all those other folks say is needed to make things happen effortlessly.

Maybe it’s the Fear of ____ (you name it and Fear is ever-present to slow you down).

No matter what it is, Fear chimes in at the most inopportune times, urging us to stop wanting more just as we are about to take one of those life-changing leaps of faith. It says things like, “Not you” or “Not now”. It tells us that the risks are too great and the rewards too uncertain.

However, Fear can only dictate our future when we allow it to. When we choose to embrace our innate curiosity, address negative self-talk, and cultivate inner trust, we remove the barriers fear creates and stay focused on the path that will lead us to our dreams.

Let’s talk about it!

What Does it Look and Feel Like to Embrace Curiosity?

Curiosity can act as a magical antidote to Fear, transforming it from a hindrance into a catalyst for growth that helps us get and stay connected to our authentic voice. When we approach our dreams from a space of curiosity, we shift our focus from the potential for failure to the endless possibilities that lie ahead. Instead of dwelling on what could go wrong, we become intrigued by the opportunities for learning and exploration.

Let’s Talk About Practical Steps:

  • Ask yourself, “What if ____?” but with a focus on the good that could come your way.

  • Without judgment, explore new perspectives and ideas related to your dreams.

  • Embrace experimentation and allow experiences that feel like “failure” to serve as valuable opportunities for new awareness.

  • Surround yourself with individuals who inspire and challenge you.

By embracing curiosity, we both expand our horizons and nourish a mindset that thrives on discovery and innovation, propelling us closer to our dreams.

What Happens When We Bring Awareness to Negative Self-Talk?

Negative self-talk amplifies our fears, feeding into doubts and insecurities that undermine our confidence. However, when we bring gentle awareness to our inner dialogue and set the intention to reframe those negative thoughts, we can reclaim control over our mindset and connect to a more empowering narrative.

Let’s Talk About Practical Steps:

  • Challenge negative thoughts with reasoning that is aligned with the reality that you are an amazing human who has done amazing things.

  • Practice mindfulness to observe thoughts without judgment.

  • Cultivate that attitude of gratitude and make time to focus on your strengths and accomplishments.

  • Replace self-criticism with affirmations and positive self-talk.

By bringing gentle awareness to our inner dialogue, we dismantle the barriers that fear erects and cultivate a mindset grounded in self-compassion and optimism, thereby empowering ourselves to pursue our dreams with a sense of flexibility and determination.

What Can We Shift When We Focus on Self-Trust?

At the heart of overcoming Fear lies self-trust – that unwavering belief in our abilities and the conviction that we have everything we need inside of us to navigate the challenges that arise on our journey. When we trust ourselves, we release the need for external validation and lean into our intuition to guide us forward.

Let’s Talk About Practical Steps:

  • Regularly make time to reflect on past achievements and moments of resilience.

  • Practice self-compassion and embrace the perfection that is imperfection.

  • Set realistic goals and celebrate progress, big and small, along the way.

  • Surround yourself with a supportive community that fosters your sense of self-trust.

As we improve our self-trust, we reinforce our inner strength, empowering ourselves to face fear with confidence and clarity as we pursue our dreams.

When all is said and done, while Fear may TRY to cast a long shadow on the path to our dreams, when we embrace our innate curiosity, rebuild our sense of self-trust, and learn to reframe negative self-talk, we illuminate the way forward.

As we venture into the unknown, it is important to remember that the journey itself holds transformative power, shaping us into individuals capable of overcoming obstacles and embracing the fullness of our potential. So, dare to dream, dare to explore, and dare to embrace the fear that accompanies growth, for it is in confronting our fears that we discover the endless possibilities waiting for us.
